English Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs in the United Kingdom. The term “cocker” deriving from their use to hunt the Eurasian woodcock. When the English Cocker Spaniel was brought to the United States, it was bred to a different standard, which enabled it to specialize in hunting the American Woodcock. Over the years this breed of dog has won the hearts of families and remains very popular in the United States.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a very outgoing, personable, smart, and loyal dog. They have warm personalities and approachable demeanors. They do well with families of all dynamics and tend to adapt well to their living environment. The English Cocker Spaniel also trains well, especially when his owner utilizes positive reinforcement training techniques. They are very approachable and tend to make fantastic family pets.
The English Cocker Spaniel’s coat does require daily care to look its best. Daily brushing using a pin brush tends to yield best results. Keeping your English Cocker Spaniel looking and feeling his best by providing him with a warm bath every four to five weeks is advised.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a semi-active dog and does need ample amounts of energy to look and feel their best. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep this breed healthy. Many English Cocker Spaniel owners recommend feeding this dog two meals a day, spaced about twelve hours apart. It is also very important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care.
